Be that as it may, in two ASEAN countries, there still is by all accounts a few inadequacies in the training area. There are three issues in the instruction arrangement of both Indonesia and Philippines that will be examined and looked at: quality, reasonableness of training, and financial plan. Philippines has updated its instructive framework as of late, making the obligatory long stretches of training twelve rather than ten. With this change is the alteration of the educational plan. All subjects under all the general subjects of training, language and writing, normal sciences, sociologies, expressions, and humanities will be educated from first grade to twelfth grade except for science for first grade to ninth grade. Be that as it may, even with this educational plan, there is as yet a decrease in the nature of training. This decay can be incompletely credited to the deficiency of instructors with the 2013 state funded schools educator understudy proportion of 1:36. Another issue in the Philippine instructive framework is the reasonableness of training. There is a major uniqueness in instructive accomplishments across social gatherings. For instance, the financially hindered understudies have higher dropout rates, particularly in the basic level. What's more, a large portion of the green beans understudies at the tertiary level originate from generally wealthy families. Another issue is the inadequate financial plan dispensed for instruction by the legislature. The Philippine Constitution has commanded the legislature to distribute the most noteworthy extent of its spending plan to training. Be that as it may, the Philippines despite everything has one of the most reduced spending allotments to training among the ASEAN nations. With this root issue, state funded schools face the trouble brought by poor offices, came up short on instructors, lacking understanding materials and others. At last, glancing in the commonsense level, there is an instructive and work confound. There is an enormous extent of crisscross among preparing and genuine employments. This is the serious issue at the tertiary level and it is additionally the reason for the presence of a huge gathering of taught jobless or underemployed. It is lamentable how the training framework doesn't profit the young in a center pay nation, as surveyed by the World Bank. Another serious issue of the Indonesian instruction framework is its low culmination rate. Just 33% of Indonesian understudies â⬠in a nation where 57 million go to class â⬠complete essential tutoring. This is a proof of the low moderateness of training in Indonesia. A great deal of issues in the instruction part in Indonesia emerge from its deficiency of financial plan. Along these lines, training specialists state not exactly 50% of the countryââ¬â¢s educators have even the base capabilities to instruct appropriately advertisement instructor non-attendance floats at around 20 percent. Numerous instructors in the government funded educational system work outside of the study hall to improve their wages. A potential specialist in this spending lack is debasement. Indonesian Corruption Watch claims there are not many schools in the nation that are perfect of unite, pay off or theft â⬠with 40 percent of their financial plan redirected before it arrives at the study hall. This issue is additionally not obscure in the Philippines. At long last, glancing in the realistic level, there is an instructive and business confuse. There is a huge extent of jumble among preparing and genuine occupations. This is the serious issue at the tertiary level and it is likewise the reason for the presence of an enormous gathering of instructed jobless or underemployed. As per McKinseyââ¬â¢s Education to Employment study, just 42 percent of overall managers accept new alumni are enough arranged for work. With this, we see the compromising results of poor instruction framework to the general public, a typical predicament in Indonesia and the Philippines. The loud shrill of the alarm suddenly jolts you from you sleep and your first thought is to smash it against the bedroom wall. You feel groggy and more tired than you were when you went to bed.You hit the snooze alarm a couple times before you finally drag yourself out of bed. You spend the entire day feeling exhausted, irritable and your mind canât seem to focus on anything. It takes copious amounts of coffee for you to get through the day.For many people, getting quality sleep is a really challenge.Every morning, they wake up feeling like they did not get enough rest.According to a study conducted in 2016 by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in every three adults in the United States does not get adequate sleep on a regular basis. According to the Great British Bedtime Report published by the Sleep Council, 74% of British citizens sleep for less than seven hours a night, while 12% of Brits get less than five hours of sleep. While sleep is quite a popular topic, most of us only have some basic knowledge about sleep and how it affects us.We all know that we need enough sleep, but do you know what happens when you fall asleep?Do you know the role of sleep in your life?In this article, we take an in-depth look at sleep, the role it plays in our bodies, the processes that take place when we fall asleep, and how you can use this knowledge to ensure you get quality sleep every night.THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING QUALITY SLEEPGetting quality sleep is as important for your health as exercising regularly and eating healthy.Unfortunately, the world we live in today is full of obligations, responsibilities and endless distractions, all of which keep us from getting adequate sleep every night.Below are seven reasons why getting quality sleep is important.Poor Sleep Is Linked To Weight Gain Most people trying to lose weight do not often consider the effect of sleep on their weight loss efforts. However, various studies h ave shown that there is a link between poor sleep and weight gain.According to a research carried out in 2017 by the European Society of Endocrinology, poor sleep has a number of effects that contribute to obesity.First, poor sleep lowers your metabolic rate. Metabolism is the process by which consumed calories are converted into energy. Poor sleep slows down your metabolic rate, which means that less calories are being converted into energy. The excess calories are converted into fat for storage.Poor sleep also leads to production of more insulin and cortisol. High levels of these two hormones prompt the body to convert more calories into fat, leading to weight gain. Finally, poor sleep leads to increased production of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger, while decreasing the production of leptin, a hormone that makes us feel satiated. As such, people who get poor sleep tend to have higher appetites, and are thus more likely to gain weight.Good Sleep Improves Your Concentration and ProductivityA night of restlessness and inadequate sleep not only leaves you feeling exhausted when you wake up, it also affects your cognitive abilities, concentration, productivity and performance.According to a study, lack of sleep leads to slower and weaker firing of the neurons within the cells in your temporal lobe.In other words, lack of adequate sleep makes your brain activity much slower, which can have huge effects on your ability to perform tasks that require concentration and cognitive skills. This explains why you find yourself struggling to complete even simple tasks after a sleepless night â" the neurons in your brain cells are as exhausted as you are.Sleeplessness makes it increasingly difficult for your body to perform simple tasks like taking visual data and converting it into actual thoughts for analysis.According to the study, the researchers found that after a night of inadequate sleep, some of our brain activity shows patterns associated with sleep. In othe r words, after a restless night, some regions of your brain seem to âdoze offâ, which causes the mental lapses that make it difficult to concentrate and perform at your usual capacity.Sleep Can Lead To Enhanced Athletic PerformanceNot only does quality sleep improve your cognitive abilities, it can also improve your performance in sports and athletic activities. This is why elite athletes and sportsmen often hire sleep coaches as part of their training regime. Sleep affects athletic performance in a number of ways.First, quality sleep leads to improved reaction times. As an elite athlete, you need to react to different situations within a fraction of a second.According to a study, lack of sleep impairs your cognitive and motor performance in the same way being intoxicated does. A single night without sleep can reduce an athleteâs reaction times by over 300%.According to another study, young athletes who do not get enough sleep are more likely to suffer injuries in the field. As ide from the risk of injuries, another study by the National Sleep Foundation found that sleep related fatigue can lead to shorter playing careers for elite athletes.Better sleep also leads to better accuracy and faster sprint times, as well as fewer mental errors.Poor Sleep Increases the Risk of Stroke and Heart DiseaseFor most people, the effects of inadequate sleep can be brushed away with some caffeine. However, you should think again about sacrificing your sleep.Lack of adequate sleep has been linked to increased chances of suffering from stroke and heart diseases, regardless of your age, weight or lifestyle habits.According to a review of 15 medical studies, lack of adequate sleep increases your chances of suffering stroke by 15%. It also increases the risk of suffering from coronary heart disease by 48%.However, this does not imply that getting long hours of sleep is the solution.According to the studies, oversleeping also increases your risk of suffering from stroke and heart diseases by 65% and 38% respectively. Therefore, the secret is to ensure that you get just enough sleep, not too little and not too much.Sleep Affects the Risk of Suffering from DiabetesMost people consider their weight, their diet and their family medical history when assessing the risk of developing diabetes. However, your sleeping habits also influence your chances of developing Diabetes. Sleep deprivation has been linked to higher chances of suffering from type 2 Diabetes, a disease that is characterized by high blood sugar levels and an increased risk of heart disease. One of the effects of sleep deprivation is that it throws your endocrine system off balance. More specifically, lack of sleep increases the production of insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar levels. If this increased production of insulin is sustained, your body develops insulin resistance, which means that the effectiveness of insulin within your body is reduced. Since insulin can no longer regulate blood sugar effectively, the levels of glucose in your blood increase, leading to higher chances of developing type 2 diabetes.Sleep deprivation also increases your appetite, leading to increased craving of sugary foods and carbohydrates and higher chances of indulging in overeating.Over time, the increased intake of sugary foods and carbs can mess up with your blood sugar levels and lead to obesity, both of which increase the risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes.Poor Sleep Can Lead to DepressionA night of restless sleep can make you less enthusiastic and more irritable during the day. However, sustained lack of sleep can lead to full blown depression, a condition that is characterized by constant feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, anxiety, sadness and loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed.According to a study, people suffering from insomnia have an increased risk of suffering from depression compared those who get enough sleep every night within their age bracket. Acco rding to another study, 90% of people suffering from depression also complain about lack of quality sleep.According to another study published in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, lack of sleep leads to increased stimulation of the amygdala, a part of the brain that is linked to emotionally negative stimuli. In other words, lack of sleep decreases your ability to suppress negative stimuli. On the other hand, getting adequate sleep can improve your outlook on life and lower your chances of suffering from depression.Good Sleep Can Enhance Your Immune FunctionAccording to a research by the University of Washington, sleep is closely linked with our immune response.Specifically, lack of sleep has a negative impact on the ability of your immune system to fight off infections. The link between sleep and your immune system comes from the fact that sleep is closely tied to certain disease-fighting compounds that our bodies produce while we are asleep. Therefore, lack of sleep means that there is reduced production of these compounds, which in turn means that our bodies are less equipped to fight off infections. Therefore, people who do not get enough sleep are more susceptible to illnesses. In addition, these people tend to remain sick for longer periods compared to those who get adequate sleep every night.UNDERSTANDING YOUR SLEEP CYCLE We have seen that sleep plays a very important role in our health and wellbeing. However, while we emphasize the need for getting enough sleep, it is also important to acknowledge the importance of the quality of sleep we get.Perhaps you have gone to bed early one night and slept for 8 to 9 hours, only to wake up feeling tired. On yet another night, you might go to bed late, sleep for about 6 hours and wake up feeling refreshed. Why this difference? The secret lies in something known as the sleep cycle.Once you understand your sleep cycle, it becomes easier to fall asleep and wake up feeling well rested and refreshed , whether you sleep for 6 hours or 9.So, what is the sleep cycle? Most people think that when we fall asleep, your brain and body simply logs off into a passive state until we wake up again. However, this is not what actually happens. When you fall asleep, your brain still remains active and exhibits certain patterns of activity in a predictable cycle. The cycle consists of the following stages:Stage OneThis stage occurs immediately you start falling asleep. It is a transition from being conscious to being asleep. During this stage, you are in a light sleep where your brain is still somewhat alert and aware of the surroundings. This means that being woken during this stage is easy. During this stage, the brain produces alpha and theta waves, which are slower than the waves produced during wakefulness.Your breathing, eye movements and heartbeat slow down and your muscles relax. This stages is relatively brief, lasting anywhere between 5 to 10 minutes.Stage TwoThis is another light stage that drops your further into sleep. During this stage, your brain waves slow down further, but your brain starts producing brief bursts of electrical activity known as sleep spindles.Your body temperature decreases, your heartbeat slows down even further and your eye movements stop. Most of your repeated sleep cycles are spent in Stage Two. Each Stage Two cycle lasts about 20 minutes.Stage ThreeDuring this stage, you start falling into deep sleep. Your brain switches from producing alpha and theta waves to delta waves, which are even slower. All eye movements and muscle activity ceases during this stage. It is during this stage that your body stimulates growth and development, repairs muscles and tissues and boosts your immune system.Waking up during this stage is very difficult, since your body has shut down most responses to external stimuli. These stages are also known as slow wave sleep. This stage lasts about half an hour.Rapid Eye Movement (REM) SleepThis is the final phase of yo ur sleep cycle. During this stage, your brain activity increases as well as your heart rate and blood pressure. Your breathing becomes fast and irregular and your eyes start darting rapidly in different directions. This is the stage where you usually find yourself dreaming. It is during the REM sleep stage that your body consolidates and processes information collected during the day in readiness for storage in your long term memory. The REM sleep stage usually occurs between 90 and 110 minutes after falling asleep, and can last about one hour.During a typical nightâs sleep, the average adult experiences five to six cycles of REM sleep. These stages occur in sequence during the night. For you to have a refreshing sleep, it is important to experience all the stages of the sleep cycle. For instance, without getting to the deep sleep stage, you wonât feel rested even after a full nightâs sleep. While the stages occur in sequence, it is possible to miss out on some stages. This occurs due to disturbances that keep you from getting into deep sleep, such as stress and anxiety, loud noises near your bedroom, an uncomfortable mattress, a snoring partner, and so on.In addition, how you feel after waking up depends on the stage you were in just before waking up. This explains why it is possible to sleep for a few hours and wake up feeling fresh while other times you might get plenty of sleep but still wake up feeling groggy. The secret here is to try and wake up at the end of a sleep cycle. At this point, you are usually in light sleep, and your body and brain do not have a problem transitioning to wakefulness.Waking up during the deep sleep stage, on the other hand, will leave you feeling exhausted, since it is the hardest time for your body and brain to switch to wakefulness.THE CIRCADIAN CYCLE AND ITS EFFECT ON SLEEP Apart from your sleep cycle, there is something else that affects the quality of sleep you get. Have you ever found yourself feeling drowsy at about th e same time each day? If yes, this happens because of your circadian cycle. The circadian cycle is a 24 hour internal clock that runs inside your body, controlling periods of sleepiness and alertness and the energy levels within your body associated with each period. This internal clock depends on our own activity plus different external stimuli to produce hormones that prepare our body to perform the tasks that are associated with that particular time (alertness versus sleepiness).Your circadian cycle is controlled by an area of the brain that is sensitive to light. This explains why humans are conditioned to be most alert during the day and ready to sleep once darkness settles in.For most people, the circadian cycle causes a dip in energy levels in two phases. The first one occurs between 2:00 am and 4:00 am while the second one occurs between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm (this explains why you tend to feel sleepy just after having lunch). The circadian cycle developed as an evolutionary trai t to keep us alert during the day and to allow our bodies to rest at night. However, in todayâs world, most of our activities are not tied to the rising and setting of the sun. We have artificial lighting which continues stimulating our brains even during the night, times when we are supposed to be asleep. These artificial stimulants can easily confuse our internal clock, leaving it with no clue about the current time. A confused internal clock means you might feel the urge to sleep when you should be awake or find it unable to sleep when you are supposed to be asleep. For instance, spending the whole Saturday night catching up on the latest TV series can disrupt your circadian cycle, making you feel sleepy during the day on Monday, a time when you should be alert and working. Therefore, it is important to ensure that your circadian cycle is in sync with your sleeping schedule. Below are some practical tips you can use to reset your circadian cycle:Stick to a consistent sleep schedul e: The easiest way to confuse your circadian rhythm is to have irregular sleeping and waking times. To maintain a balanced internal clock, you should have a regular sleeping and waking time. This allows your body to adapt to your schedule. You should follow this sleeping schedule even during the weekend. Do not be tempted to catch up on sleep during the weekend, since this can confuse your internal clock and mess up with your ability to fall asleep and wake up on schedule.Go for a morning walk: Another way to keep your circadian rhythm in check is to go for a morning walk. A morning walk exposes you to sunlight, which not only gives you a boost of energy, but also signals your brain that the day is starting. If you do not have time for a walk, simply raise the blinds in your room or office.Avoid using tech gadgets at night: The light emitted by tech gadgets can confuse your brain into thinking that it is still daytime, thus throwing off your internal clock. Most tech gadgets emit ar tificial blue light, which is wrongly perceived by your brain as natural light.STRATEGIES FOR GETTING BETTER SLEEPSo, now that you know about the sleep cycle and the circadian rhythm and how they affect the quality of sleep you get, how can you use this knowledge to ensure that you get better sleep?Below are some strategies to help you get better quality sleep:Plan Your Night so as to Wake Up at the End of a Sleep CycleWe have already seen that what matters most is not the hours of sleep you get. Instead, what matters is going through all the stages of the sleep cycle and waking up when your mind and body are most prepared for the transition to wakefulness. Therefore, when going to bed, you should plan your night not in hours, but in sleep cycles. For instance, if you want to wake up at 7:00 am in the morning and want to get five cycles of sleep (each lasts about an hour and half), that means you will need about seven and a half hours of sleep. Therefore, you should go plan your night such that you will be falling asleep at around 11.30 pm.Start Winding Down About an Hour before BedTo ensure you get quality sleep, you need to start winding down about an hour before getting into bed. Avoid eating or drinking coffee or alcohol during this time. If possible, dim your lights and avoid using tech gadgets or watching TV an hour to bed. Empty your bladder and change into your bedclothes. All these activities signal your mind that bedtime is approaching, so it starts producing melatonin in readiness for sleep. Avoiding food, alcohol and caffeine and emptying your bladder helps prevent nighttime distractions which might keep you from reaching the deep sleep stage.Find an Activity That Helps You Wind DownThis is related to the previous point. As part of winding down, you should have a regular activity that you do each night before going to bed.Our minds are creatures of habit, and once a certain activity becomes your bedtime ritual, your brain will automatically start shut ting things down once you start doing the activity. Such activities include things like reading a book, taking a warm bath or meditating.Keep Your Bedroom Cool, Dark and QuietKeeping your bedroom cool, dark and quiet signals to the part of the brain that controls your circadian rhythm that it is time to sleep, thereby triggering the secretion of melatonin. For instance, you can buy black-out curtains for your bedroom window. This is especially useful when you live in a city, where bright lights from outside your window can keep you from falling asleep easily. However, ensure that you are also getting enough natural light during the day in order to keep your circadian rhythm in check.Get a Comfortable MattressSometimes, the inability to get quality sleep might be due to your mattress. The wrong type of mattress can make you uncomfortable at night, making it hard for you to get into deep sleep, which is needed in order for your body to restore itself.A low quality mattress can also cause back pains, making it harder for you to fall asleep. Go for mattresses that are firm and comfortable.FINAL WORDSQuality is important, not only for your cognitive abilities and productivity, but also for your health. Therefore, you need to ensure that you are getting enough hours of quality sleep every night. For you to get quality sleep, you need to ensure that you go through all the stages of the sleep cycle every night. You also need to align your sleeping schedule to your circadian rhythm.Once you do this, waking up feeling well rested and refreshed every morning will be a reality, instead of something that you can only long for. Salman Rushdie is perhaps the most prolific foreign writer of modern times. As such, one can consider him a major voice in the criteria for what makes for a good expatriated writer. We will write a custom essay sample on Does Khaled Hosseiniââ¬â¢s Writing Matter? or any similar topic only for you Order Now In his 1992 collection of essays, Imaginary Homelands, Rushdie sets forth multiple essential qualities the expatriated writer must possess. The most important three of these qualities are the ability to create universal subjects, must be daring, and encourage people to be open-minded. Khaled Hosseiniââ¬â¢s The Kite Runner mostly accomplishes these tasks, though coming short in one of Rushdieââ¬â¢s major qualities. This is shown from the novelââ¬â¢s subject matter, in conjunction with an article from online magazine Slate, which highlights the major flaw. Rushdieââ¬â¢s first point is that an exiled writer should be able to ââ¬Å"speak properly on a subject of universal significance and appeal. â⬠Hosseini, in his many subjects pertaining to human nature that is present everywhere, accomplishes this task. One such topic in Kite Runner is loss. At some point or another, every human being has experienced loss. Whether it be the loss of a parent, like Amir losing Baba, the loss of a close friend, such as Amirââ¬â¢s loss of Hassan, or loss early in life such as Sohrabââ¬â¢s loss of Sanuabar, the reader can relate, regardless of race, place, or creed. The losses do not necessarily have to be physical, as the loss of innocence that occurs in the father-son tandem of Hassan and Sohrab is transferable to the everyday struggles one may face with beliefs, experience, or emotions. The easily acceptable nature of these topics as realities of the ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠world, as well as being a clear burden on the characters in the universe set forth by Hosseini show that he is definitively able to accomplish the task of relating loss. Another such subject is that of redemption. Throughout the novel, Amirââ¬â¢s conquest for the reconciliation of his deeds knows no bounds. This is very much the situation many people are in after a terrible mistake leaves them begging not only for forgiveness, but redemption. The people who are in these situations will often go to great lengths, risking their mental or physical well-beings in order to rest their conscience at the end of their journeys. For Amir, it meant the rescue of Sohrab, but for the common man, it can be as small as apologizing or as large as turning to an enemy in order for help. The ability of the themes, though being masterfully complex and unique, to be related to and associated with on a deep, connective level are clear indications that Hosseini has fulfilled the first task set out by Rushdie, to create universal subject matter. While performing extremely well in the area of creating a universally relatable subject matter, Hosseini falls short in one of the major tasks of Rushdie, being daring. While some may argue that Hosseiniââ¬â¢s depictions of rape and violence are edgy or daring, his presentation of them, is not. In fact, Slate argues that ââ¬Å"the Hollywood elements of his story conduce to a view of Afghanistan and its dilemmas that is in the end more riddled with facile moralizing than even the author may realize. â⬠The argument set forth by Slateââ¬â¢s Meghan Oââ¬â¢Rourke is that though Hosseiniââ¬â¢s novel does depict these brutal scenes, they are moralized. They are painted in a light where they are seemingly not allegorical or necessary, but simple tools for shock value or fear induction. It is because of this shortcoming, that he is firstly failing the task set forth by Rushdie, in being daring. He once more fails this task in the choice of writing style. Because Hosseini chose to write a book deeply engraved with Afghan culture, which is already a fine line for an English novel, one would hope that he would take the risk of writing with a style that mirrors the roots of the storyline. Instead, Hosseini chooses a cinematic approach, which mirrors that of American film, and American culture, which is a safe approach to the subject matter. He is not reflecting the risk that comes with changing between cultures for expatriates, therefore is not fulfilling the task set forth by Rushdie. Though Hosseini is able to mostly fill the requirements for what Rushdie defines as a great expatriated writer, the biggest flaw comes in his inability to take risks in his prose that reflect the risks taken by the exiles who preceded him. Though he does have flaws, the final task set forth by Rushdie, making the reader open-minded, is easily fulfilled by Hosseini and his subject matter. Hosseiniââ¬â¢s use of the Hazara-Pashtun conflict is effective in that it creates a more in-depth look at how a place many generalize as having one ethnicity is actually diverse, but not without conflict. The conflict also humanizes both parties in showing that although societal standards separate them, Hazaras and Pashtuns are not always treated as less than equals. This concept works to make the reader aware that every Muslim that they may see, be it in America, France, or England, is more than simply a ââ¬Å"potential terrorist,â⬠but as many individuals with complex emotions and conflict, trying to create a new life. In addition, Assefââ¬â¢s introduction into the story further humanizes the Afghans. This is because, the concept of the Middle-Eastern groups bullying the world, the Afghan people are having their country destroyed by Assef, who is a neo-Nazi. His socially and morally despicable actions lead the reader to feel a sense of sympathy for the Afghan people. It is due to this feeling of sympathy that the standard Afghan is looked at as not only a human being, but an equal, with fears and oppression as great as that of a man from America to Japan. These two forms of humanization lead the reader to not only become more accepting of Afghan people, but all new people in general, showing that they could be as troubled and frightened as the person judging them. When judging an expatriated writerââ¬â¢s work, one often needs a guideline, or ââ¬Å"measuring stick,â⬠in order to truly gauge the significance of the writing. Salman Rushdieââ¬â¢s qualifications of the expatriated writer are extremely important in that they set that guideline for what an exiled writer should hope to achieve. Though Slate, and the reader, may find some fault with Hosseiniââ¬â¢s novel, The Kite Runnerââ¬â¢s ability to take risks, an amazing job is done at filling two massively important pieces of Rushdieââ¬â¢s philosophy in its universal appeal and ability to open oneââ¬â¢s minds. In doing so, the clear answer to the titular question of this essay, ââ¬Å"Does Khaled Hosseiniââ¬â¢s Writing Matter? â⬠is yes. Works Cited: Hosseini, Khaled. The Kite Runner. Would you please tell me what the correct usage/spelling is? Although I have included this expression in a previous post on cat words, I think it deserves a post of its own. Heres what I had to say the first time around: Catty-corner is a directional word, meaning that something is diagonally across from something else. The word started out as cater-corner. Cater is an English dialect word meaning ââ¬Å"to set or move diagonally.â⬠When the word cater with its meaning of to set or move diagonally dropped out of the language, folk etymology got busy and now we have all kinds of ââ¬Å"catâ⬠variants for this concept: catty-corneredâ⬠¨ kitty-cornerâ⬠¨ kitty-corneredâ⬠¨ catty-cornerâ⬠¨ cat-a-corner kitty-cornerâ⬠¨ kit-a-corner This time I have my brand-new copy of Brewers Dictionary of Phrase Fable (17th edtion) to consult. This is what I find under the entry cater-cornered: Cater-cornered. Placed diagonally, as of a badly parked car in a parking space. Cater is an old word for the four dots on dice, which form diagonals, from French quatre, four. Other spellings of the term are catty-cornered and kitty-cornered, as if somehow to do with cats. Apparently the dialect word with the meaning to set or move diagonally, derived from quatre. As for the correct usage/spelling, the usage seems to be universal as to meaning. Something that is catty-cornered to something else is diagonally opposite. Until some authority decrees otherwise, I suppose that spelling and pronunciation are a matter of local usage. I grew up with kitty-corner. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! Keep learning! The protagonist, Ned Weeks, is Kramerââ¬â¢s alter ego - an outspoken and acerbic personality who was the voice of reason so many people both inside and outside the gay community refused to listen to or follow. Kramer himself originated the Gay Menââ¬â¢s Health Crisis which was one of the first groups founded to help victims of AIDS and spread awareness of the disease. Kramer was later forced out of the group he helped to found due to the board of directors feeling he was over confrontational and hostile. Sexual Revolution In the beginning of the 1980s, the gay population in America was experiencing a sexual revolution. Especially in New York City, gay men and women finally felt free enough to come ââ¬Å"out of the closetâ⬠and express pride in who they were and the lives they wished to lead. This sexual revolution coincided with the outbreak of HIV/AIDS and the only prevention advocated by medical personnel at that time was abstinence. This solution was unacceptable to a population of oppressed people who had finally found freedom through sexual expression. Kramer and his alter ego Ned Weeks, did his best to talk to his friends, send out information, and get government assistance to convince the gay community of the real and present danger of the as yet unnamed plague that was being transmitted sexually. Kramer was met with resistance and anger from every side and it would take over four years before any of his efforts found success. Plot Synopsis The Normal Heart spans a period of three years from 1981-1984 and chronicles the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York City from the perspective of the protagonist, Ned Weeks. Ned is not an easy man to love or befriend. He challenges everyoneââ¬â¢s viewpoints and is willing to speak and speak loudly, about unpopular issues. The play opens at a doctorââ¬â¢s office where four gay men wait to be seen by Dr. Emma Brookner. She is one of the few doctors willing to see and attempt to treat patients who come to her with the varied and bizarre symptoms with which AIDS first presents. By the end of the first scene, two of the four men are diagnosed positive for the disease. The other two men are worried about possibly being carriers of the disease. (This bears repeating: It is important to note that the disease is so new it doesnââ¬â¢t have a name yet.) Ned and a few others found a group to help spread awareness of this new and deadly disease. Ned butts heads with the board of directors frequently because the board wishes to focus on helping those already infected and in trouble while Ned wants to push ideas that may prevent the spread of the disease - namely, abstinence. Nedââ¬â¢s ideas are distinctly unpopular and his personality renders him incapable of winning anyone to his side. Even his partner, Felix, a writer for the New York Times is reluctant to write anything having to do with this supposed homosexual disease that only seems to affect gays and junkies. Ned and his group attempt to meet with the governor of New York several times with no success. In the meantime, the number of people diagnosed and deceased from the disease begins to rise exponentially. Ned wonders if any help is ever going to come from the government and strikes out on his own to go on radio and TV to spread awareness. His actions eventually lead the group he created to force him out. The board of directors does not support his insistence on having the word ââ¬Å"Gayâ⬠on the letterhead or return address on mailings. They do not want him doing any interviews (since he wasnââ¬â¢t voted president) and they do not want Ned as the main voice speaking out for the gay community. He is forced out and goes home to help his partner, Felix, now in the final stages of the disease. Production Details Setting: New York City The stage is meant to be ââ¬Å"whitewashedâ⬠with statistics about the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic written in plain black lettering for the audience to read. Notes about what statistics were used in the original production can be found in the script published by the New American Library. Time: 1981-1984 Cast Size: This play can accommodate 14 actors. Male Characters: 13 Female Characters: 1 Roles Ned Weeks is difficult to get along with and love. His ideas are ahead of his time. Dr. Emma Brookner is one of the first doctors to treat the new and nameless disease infecting the gay community. She is under-appreciated in her field and her advice and prevention ideas are unpopular. The character of Dr. Emma Brookner is confined to a wheelchair due to a childhood bout of polio. This wheelchair, along with her illness, is a subject of discussion in theà dialogue of the play and the actress playing her must remain seated in the wheelchair the entire production. The character of Dr. Emma Brookner is based on the real-life doctor Dr. Linda Laubenstein who was one of the first doctors to treat patients with HIV/AIDS. Bruce Niles is the handsome president of the support group Ned helped found. He is unwilling to come out of the closet at work and refuses to do any interview that might out him as a gay man. He is terrified he may be a carrier of the disease as so many of his partners have been infected and died. Felix Turner is Nedââ¬â¢s partner. He is a writer for the fashion and food sections of the New York Timesà but is still reluctant to write anything to publicize the disease even after he is infected. Ben Weeks is Nedââ¬â¢s brother. With time, the definition of social classes has become dilute, as people no longer act in ways that show their social belonging. This paper seeks to explore the history of social class, taste and capitalism. At the end, be able to establish whether there is a link between the different phenomena. In the twelfth century, most people lived in, the villages, as opposed to the few who lived in the towns. The town dwellers consisted of skilled labourers who the nobles paid for their upkeep for the various jobs they did. A great pandemic reduced the population significantly and led to few skilled labourers in towns. The nobles wooed people from the villages to come work in the towns by giving the skilled labourers a wage for the work done. With time, skilled labourers in the towns became rich, were able to leave the skilled labour, and became traders. This led to the development of trade to the extent that different nations traded with each other. Merchants came up, and they started investing their money to buy goods and sell them in a different place. This was how capitalism started and developed. Capitalism is a financial system where individuals or corporations solely do investment and make profits. In this economy, the private sector has the right to produce, dispense and exchange wealth without any interference. In capitalism, the government does not control or interfere with the making or distribution of the wealth of individuals (Holland, 1997). The system that controls the economy is the market prices of the goods as well as the profits incurred. In addition, Napoleonââ¬â¢s passion for his work and country comes out in the letters and utterances he makes to his brothers and soldiers. Napoleon has affection towards his friends and family. Despite the distances between them, he keeps writing to his elder brother Joseph. On June 29th 1795, he writes to his elder brother concerning his travel to a far place. Napoleon wishes to have the memory of his brother whom he refers to as a dear friend, thus he requests for his portrait. Though they are of age and free to achieve different goals in life, Napoleon does not wish that his brother depart. This makes him sad as he fears that it would be long before he sees his brother. Almost a month letter; Napoleon writes to Joseph again, informing him about a job he receives as a general of the army in the west. However, he is unhappy because Joseph is prudent and laconic. Though he is free to make his decisions, Napoleon shows interest in having his brother give him direction concerning the job offer (Headley, 1858). Misinformation and misconception about Muslim women is the main reasons why so many Westernerââ¬â¢s have the picture of Islam, especially in America, associated it with bad images of oppressed women hiding in their hijab,, or walking behind their husbands. What does Islam say about women and their rightââ¬â¢s. Do Islamic countries follow Islamic teaching when dealing with womenââ¬â¢s issues? Beliefs about how Muslim women are treated and blame the religion instead of the culture from which they came from. I hope that instead of falling into the typical stereotypes and cultural innovation, the information here will inform you of the true religion of Islam and how women are supposed to be treated through the verbatim words of god from any human being. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world. How ever, when people say, "Islam," most people think about terrorism and the tragedy of September 11th, but what is true Islam? How does this affect today's world? Islam may be the most misunderstood religion in the world, but after reading this, youââ¬â¢ll probably have a lot more in common with the religion that is so foreign to so many. A comprehensive demographic study of more than 200 countries finds that there are 1.57 billion Muslims of all ages living in the world today, representing 23 percent of an estimated 2009 world population of 6.8 billion. I eat enough meat, vegetables and grains to meet the daily recommended requirements. I seem to be getting enough protein and my fat intake is appropriate at around 30% of my diet. My cholesterol intake is also about average. I noticed that by day 3, I was eating more fruit, but that may have been to appear healthier after seeing my previous two days diet. I am going to make a point to eat a piece of fruit with or after every meal, and as a snack instead of cookies.I learned from the tracking that I do need to to eat more fruit and find a way to ingest more dairy. I put skim milk in my coffee and have cheese once in awhile but not enough. My sodium was a little high on day 2, mostly because I had two Cokes. I do not normally drink two Cokes in one day, but I need to be more aware of what I am drinking and drink more water. I sometimes forget that beverages count towards my diet, including coffee and Cok e. With school and work, my schedule varies. Some days I am able to eat three healthy meals a day while other days I eat on the run, or sometimes even skip meals.I do not like to eat fast food more than once a week, and I will try to continue with that. I try to exercise a few times a week, but just like meals, sometimes that is not possible. When I do exercise I try to make up for the days I miss and spend extra time on the treadmill. I am pleased that my cholesterol intake is normal and would like to keep that amount in my diet, or possibly lower it. Eating meat helps make me feel full, so I do not think cutting out meat is an option in my diet, but I could decrease my use of butter and other fats.I will start paying more attention to the amount of sodium I take in; luckily I do not eat many pre-packaged foods, so most of my sodium only comes from beverages like soda. It would be hard to give up Coke all together, but maybe I can find another sweet drink that is lower in sodium to have when I eat popcorn. I am going to start carrying a water bottle, so I will be hydrated and perhaps not feel like I need something else to drink. I do know I am not able to cut out coffee while I am in school. Transnational Corporations as the Primary ââ¬Ëmovers and shapersââ¬â¢ of the World Economy: A critical consideration Transnational corporations (TNCââ¬â¢s) have often been regarded by many commentators as the dominant institutions within the contemporary global economy, and popular discourse has regularly painted TNCââ¬â¢s as amoral financial behemoths that transcend state boundaries and plunder the earthââ¬â¢s resources at will. Dicken (2007), in his examination of TNCââ¬â¢s, attempted to allay some of the misconceptions of TNCââ¬â¢s, particularly the notion that such enterprises are truly ââ¬Ëglobalââ¬â¢ in form. The concept of globalization is one that has pervaded public and academic discourse throughout the last three decades. The term is seldom unheard in anyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦One of the features of economic globalization is what is known as economic interdependency i.e. an economic downturn in one country can have negative effects on trading partners in other nation states. One such example of this interdependency was during the 1970ââ¬â¢s when OPEC (organisation of petroleum producing countries) increased the price oil. This price hike increased the cost of energy production, which caused price inflation in many other countries. Manufacturing and transport became costlier, so profits dropped, and unemployment rose in many countries because of the inflated price of production, so enormous pressure was heaped on the welfare systems and many investors lost confidence (Martell, 2010). Another prime example of global economic interdependency was the financial crises that occurred in the United States during the latter stages of 2007. Various factors, including the sub-prime mortgage crises, had contributed to this financial catastrophe, which lead to the stock market falling 15% below its peak in 2007 (Grynbaum, 2008:C1, C7), and another dip in 2008 was indicative of an economic recession. The idea that the worldââ¬â¢s strongest economies could flourish independently was soon proved to wrong (Ritzer Dean, 2015). Affirmative action enables students of a minority background to have an increased chance in being accepted to a college. The adverse effects it may have are often not brought to light. The policies that make up affirmative action support minorities by accepting students they feel could benefit from attending that institution. This is an opportunity to enter a selective school based heavily on their race, instead of focusing on academic skills. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Dismantling Affirmative Action" essay for you Create order Their academic profiles do influence their admission; However, the students are given more leeway in regards to meeting the school standards.Accepting students who may not be the right fit for the school creates a disadvantageous situation. These students tend to fall behind the curve and receive poorer scores than those placedin less demanding programs. This is demonstrated by the ratio of black students who fall behind, blacks are more likely to enter college than are whites with similar backgrounds, they will usually get much lower grades, and far more often drop out (Sander Taylor Jr, 2012). The acceptance of the minority students can become a hindrance in their journey of receiving an education. Due to their lower scores, minorities are strengthening a pre-constructed stereotype. This leads to an overrepresentation of Latinos, among other minority groups, of the students who dropout of school. The mismatch of students is placing them in classrooms where they are unprepared or have a hard time keeping up with the pace. The lessons are geared to students whoscore higher than them and contributes to the divide in scores between these groups. It is causing more harm than good to accept students into a learning environment that is far too advanced.Seeing low scores poses a psychological toll as well. The students feel overwhelmed and gain a low sense of self. The constant disappointment and comparison of scores leads to a weak mental state and further influences the student to give up. This causes the reinforcement of stereotypes and causes the statistical data for minorities to remain low compared to other students.Utilizing affirmative action decreases the probability that mino rities will pursue their career path of choice. à Competitive fields that are accompanied by a substantial workload have even less minority representation. The mismatch of students in these institutions causes them to fall behind in core classes needed for acquiring a degree, The more colleges and universities engage in preferential treatment, the fewer the African-Americans and Hispanics who will graduate with degrees in science and engineering (Heriot, 2013). This demonstrates the placement of students in classes matching their mental capacity is crucial in their overall success.Coming from a minority background I have witnessed what an person can gain from receiving an education. Currently, the US has seen an increase in the number of jobs available which has resulted in a decreasing jobless rate, an increasing labor participation rate, and the outlook on wage growth. The economy is experiencing low unemployment rates, partially due to an increase in 235,000 jobs this past February according to the US Labor Department. With the current volume of available jobs, the Federal Reserve, known colloquially as the Fed, considers the jobless rate, the rate at which those without jobs can find them, to be near full employment, implyingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦By the macroeconomic theory learned in Economics 103 this concerns the unemployment rate, interest rates, The Fed, aggregate demand curve, monetary policy, and inflation. The Fed is cautious of raising interest rates. As interest rates rise, the cost of investment increases and therefore demand for that investment decreases. This causes a leftward shift of the aggregate demand curve as higher rates and relatively more expensive investment trigger a decrease in aggregate demand (G1). Additionally, in order to raise interest rates, the Fed must sell government bonds thus removing reserves from the banking system and reducing the supply of federal funds - causing rf to rise (G2). However, in the event the Fed fears high inflation, than they need to use a contractionary monetary policy, a policy used to fight inflation, to reduce the money supply, increase interest rates, and shift AD to the left (G3). By doing this it increases the cost of borrowing and therefore decreases the GDP (gross domestic product). The decrease of the unemployment rate also causes an increase in the stock market, which the economy is currently experiencing, because when more people have jobs, then they have more income to be invested. Additionally, if the Feds keep interest rates low, consumers have lower interest expense combined with a higher income and thus have more money to spend. This causes a ripple effect of increased spendingShow MoreRelatedJohn Godrejs Myth 10 : Growth Is A Viable Option For The Modern Day.1156 Words à |à 5 PagesOpinion 10: A Steady-State Economy is a Viable Option for the Modern Day Unsolved problems lead to radical propositions. Although it provides scores of test takers so that college administrators can know their English proficiency directly, the test is not aim at ranking. The test divides criteria into four parts: reading, listening, speaking and writing. We will write a custom essay sample on The Evaluation of TOEFL test or any similar topic only for you Order Now According to process, reading comprehension is the first part should be measured. This part tests test takersââ¬â¢ ability to comprehend academic reading materials. In this section, the format of questions Is multiple choices and content of test questions Involves In various ways such as testing vocabulary, details, and mall Ideas. To avoid creating an advantage to examinees In any one field of study, sufficient context Is provided so that no specific subject can be used to answer the questions. It is a big advantage of the test. Moreover, other advantage is like that, due to diversified questions, it helps learners to know how to get information effectively in a limited time. It also encourages test takers to read more academic materials involving in different area and critically think how to read deferent academic articles when they are learning. However, the questions of reading test mostly adopt multiple choice rather than short answer. It may limit takers to think more about their own opinion. For example, when testing about vocabulary, the question Just gives four choices and asks examinees to choose the best one. Actually, there are also have a lot of words can be selected. The goal of the question Is to assess test takers about their understanding of this word. Therefore, I think If questions may ask examinees to write down their own words based on their comprehension that Is better. In the listening section, it involves in dialogues and academic talks. The purpose of this section is to test listening comprehension in academic environment. In other words, it measures test takersââ¬â¢ ability of listening for basic comprehension, listening for pragmatic understanding and to connect and combine ideas presented in multiple information sources. Like reading section, the formats of questions also adopt various ways. Moreover, examineesââ¬â¢ note taking can be practiced and improved from the listening test. Dialogues and lectures talking will last more than one minute. To most of them, they cannot memorize the whole content without noting. Therefore, how to write down key information in a limited time can be a skill for test takers who will study In an academic atmosphere. Furthermore, diverse formats provide a good opportunity for them to realize how to master essential Information with thinking different ways. The speed of listening Is normal speed and sometimes, the listening test involves in different voices of pronunciation to make test takers know and listening test as we discussed above. I think the way that listening test needs to improve is similar to reading test. It also means that using open questions replace multiple choices can be thought. Next part is speaking test. This section will test ability to communicate effectively in a variety of situations. The ability of synthesizing and summarizing what test takers have read in their textbooks and heard in and outside of the class, the skill of forming their own opinions in response to the information they have processed, well-developed, coherent and clear idea with effective use of grammar, and good pronunciation and intonation these are main goals to assess speaking ability. The strength of this part is to combine reading with speaking and to provide opinion-based questions. Moreover, the degree of each question be tested is gradually harder. The topic for examinees may also from familiar to a little hard to understand. In my opinion, the speaking test can be a bad section as well as a good one in TOEFL. The good way is that it not Just evaluates speaking ability in academic way but also involves in common environment. It not just has output but input first such as reading, and then speaking. Nevertheless, due to the test is based on Internet, that is, speaking section also needs to be tested in the computer, and it brings a problem. Compared with talking to examiners, it is not flexible. It has no communication between examinees and examiners. For my perspective, test takers also may feel anxiety because there has no response when hey speak and feel nervous or without good preparation to speak due to time limited. The last component in TOEFL is the writing section. It measures ability to write in standard academic English. It divides into two parts: integrated writing task and independent writing task. The goal of the first part integrated writing task asks examiners to demonstrate that they have understood material coming from different sources (reading and listening) and to combine the information from those sources in a coherent, well organized, summarized written form to draw conclusions of the important points. The independent writing task aims to measure the studentsââ¬â¢ ability to state their opinions or express their comments on topics which are based on their personal knowledge and experience. In general, if test takers want to get a higher score, they should know steps of essay and practice more in academic ways. The good thing of this TOEFL writing test is using academic materials to integrate reading and listening to write a summary. Although topic of independent writing task is not necessary referring to academic issues, the writing steps should follow in academic steps. Moreover, owing to computer-based writing, the score is not influenced by handwriting. Nevertheless, it may also be a problem due to time limit especially for some people who are not good at typing or have not well speediness. It is a little hard to deal with except encouraging these persons to practice more about their typing. To sum up, I think TOEFL test is a good test though it brings some challenge to me. There have a lot of benefits of this test. Firstly, it ensures that test- takers are being measured objectively on the same material. The grading is standardized based on rubrics provided by TEST, so test scores are the same no matter whom or what is scoring them. Secondly, there is no age, no gender and no nationality limit for taking the test. Anyone who wants to assess their English language performance especially for people who need to study aboard in English feedback. When persons received their result, score will definitely appear in their paper and evaluation of each section will be provided so that examinees are able to know the strength and weakness of themselves in general ways. Finally, the speaking and writing parts integrate some input tasks such as reading and listening to test rather than be measured separately. The integrated tasks may be considered more Hellenizing in the test will help learners build the confidence needed to communicate in the academic environments they plan to enter because students need to be able to combine their language skills in the classroom. Appropriate challenge will improve learners to more think about their weakness of language learning and hence to find effective ways they can develop. However, there still have some limitations in the test. In the first place, although test takers can be offered some feedbacks from the organization, the feedbacks of scores Just simplify the degree of their performance. They cannot get more individual feedback about the strength and weakness they have according to the test. Likewise, each level still has its deviation. Even though examinees can get same level of sections for each test, they may confuse about the score why last time they can get a high score whereas this time is a low score. In the second place, I feel the time arrangement also has its problem. In general, the test will last three hours at least but Just ten minutes for break from morning to afternoon. For many test takers, the time may make them feel exhausted and influence their performance more or less. In the third place, the procedure of the test may also have its weakness. In order to avoid cheating in the test, examiners require learners to answer extra section such as reading or listening based on different individuals randomly. Hence, it will result in the time of speaking section beginning different. It is unfair to the individuals who are doing speaking earlier while others who are still doing reading or listening part can have a chance to listen othersââ¬â¢ speaking and have more time to prepare during the break. The final point I want to mention is that there have a lot of test preparation for each section test. Learners will make more focus on searching or studying methods in order to get a higher score rather than improve their language ability. As we discussed above the limitation, not all can get right solution. But I think we still are able to find some ways to improve. Firstly, the examiners can provide rubrics of each specific score for test takers instead of the level of performance. That is, I think they need to list more details of each point and make learners more better understanding about why they can get this point and why they cannot get. The feedback should mainly reflect individualââ¬â¢s strength and weakness instead of general errors. The general problem also can be placed in the reflection but not in the domain way. Secondly, when talking about dealing with the procedure, I think administers may provide another place for test takers about test speaking. In other words, when finishing their reading and listening part, examiners need to go the place which dedicated to speaking test after having a rest. Finally, due to various test preparation, in my opinion, I believe that form of diversification can be a good way to assess. For example, applying more open questions instead of multiple choices may be helpful for improving learners high order thinking. Pia also need to focus on the cloud infrastructure, platform and the software which is in the company along with offering solutions that are for the higher levels of control over service, security and the privacy of data. they are mainly to take the responsibility for the implementation and maintenance. The private cloud structure will help in long time investment for the cloud patterns, but it will provide a better self-service, scalability, multi-tenancy and the ability to work over the provisions and the changes related to the computing resources on demand (Flint, 2017). The chargeback tools tend to track the computing usage which depends on the business units to pay only for the resources one makes use of. The private cloud offers the hosted services to the limited number of people who are behind the firewall with minimising the concerns of security. The companies also give a direct control over the data. Hence, for Pia, who needs to deal with her accounting, she needs to focus o n the economic safety, scalability and the flexibility that are important for the user interface and integration capabilities, modularity and pricing. This will help in working and looking for the cloud computing with low costs where the service runs on the computer of the service provider (Rittinghouse et al., 2016). The accessibility is matched with the tangibility and checking about the scalability factors. For her, the private cloud AIS will help her with the hybrid cloud development as well, if she wants to upgrade her software, with the capability to allow the users to scale the computing requirements. The on-demand services and the efficient resource management based on the business needs is important for the allocation of resources and unified management. This will also boost the efficiency and the visibility with the management interface and the hybrid environment standards. The interoperable systems and the portable applications depend on supporting physical, virtual and the cloud platforms. The private cloud is for her organisation only with the implementation of the corporate firewall under the IT control. This is done by the proper team which is helpful for the innovation, handling the different large computation processes, the storage needs as well as the security of the data patterns. This will help in working over the cloud management platform with the optional software based storage platform and low cost with high performance virtualisation technology (Moreno et al., 2017). The business users need to focus on the secured standards where the private cloud solutions make i t possible by turning to the organisation with the innovation source and standards. For Pia and her pharmacy, it is important to focus on the outsourcing which is only possible with the private cloud structure. The accounting is done for the transaction and managing the inventory records as well. Hence, for this, the computation of the resources and the network patterns gives a better control to the cloud infrastructure (Verma, 2016). The enterprise and the business audience require to focus on the management of the needs with the maximised levels of reliability and security. This also require a proper computation of the resources with the management of the network resources that has a greater control over the cloud infrastructure. The biggest focus of the company is to handle the accounting outsourcing with security and safety. This is only possible when the invoicing, performance has been done properly. The process of the arrangement in the cloud reflects about how Pia can manage with the technology change in pharmacy with proper and easy conduct of the internet r esearch with outsourcing experience (Saraswathiet al, 2017). For her company, the private cloud AIS will be able to help in distributed the network with creating the virtual networks that have different requirements set with the combination of services. The management and the computation of resources is set through creating virtual servers and handling the VMWare vCloud Director software, through the password protected login. They are important for scaling the needs and working over the facilitation in the data centres or onsite. This will help in changing the amount of resources and the needs which depends on the resource management with minimised duration, activation and provisioning. The most familiar silica mineral is quartz in microscopic or even invisible crystals- that is, microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz. Learn more about how it is made and find out what it is made of. Chert Ingredients Like other sedimentary rocks, chert starts with particles accumulating. In this case, it happened in bodies of water. The particles are the skeletons (called tests) of plankton, microscopic creatures that spend their lives floating in the water column. Plankton secrete their tests using one of two substances that are dissolved in water: calcium carbonate or silica. When the organisms die, their tests sink to the bottom and accumulate in a growing blanket of microscopic sediment called ooze. Ooze is usually a mixture of plankton tests and extremely fine-grained clay minerals. A clay ooze, of course, eventually becomes claystone. An ooze that is primarily calcium carbonate (aragonite or calcite), a calcareous ooze, typically turns into a rock of the limestone group. Chert is derived from a siliceous ooze. The composition of ooze depends on details of geography: ocean currents, the availability of nutrients in the water, world climate, depth in the ocean, and other factors. Siliceous ooze is mostly made of the tests of diatoms (one-celled algae) and radiolarians (one-celled animals or protists). These organisms build their tests of completely uncrystallized (amorphous) silica. Other minor sources of silica skeletons include the particles made by sponges (spicules) and land plants (phytoliths). Siliceous ooze tends to form in cold, deep water because calcareous tests dissolve in those conditions. Chert Formation and Precursors Siliceous ooze turns to chert by going through a slow transformation unlike that of most other rocks. The lithification and diagenesis of chert is an elaborate process.à In some settings, siliceous ooze is pure enough to lithify into a lightweight, minimally processed rock, called diatomite if composed of diatoms, or radiolarite if made of radiolarians. The amorphous silica of a plankton test is not stable outside the living things that make it. It seeks to crystallize, and as ooze is buried to depths greater than 100 meters or so, the silica begins to mobilize with the modest rise in pressure and temperature. There is plenty of pore space and water for this to happen, and plenty of chemical energy being released by crystallization as well as by the breakdown of organic matter in the ooze. The first product of this activity is a hydrated silica (opal) called opal-CT because it resembles cristobalite (C) and tridymite (T) in X-ray studies. In those minerals, silicon and oxygen atoms align with water molecules in a different arrangement than that of quartz. A less-processed version of opal-CT is what makes up with water molecules in a different arrangement than that of quartz. A less-processed version of opal-CT is what makes up common opal. A more processed version of opal-CT is often called opal-C because in X-rays it looks more like cristobalite. The rock composed of lithified opal-CT or opal-C is porcellanite. More diagenesis causes the silica to lose most of its water as it fills pore space in the siliceous sediment. This activity converts the silica into true quartz, in microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline form, also known as the mineral chalcedony. When that happens, chert is formed. Chert Attributes and Signs Chert is as hard as crystalline quartz with a hardness rating of sevenà in the Mohs scaleà maybe a bit softer, 6.5, if it still has some hydrated silica in it. Beyond simply being hard, chert is a tough rock. It stands above the landscape in outcrops that resist erosion. Oil drillers dread it because its so hard to penetrate. Chert has a curvy conchoidal fracture that is smoother and less splintery than the conchoidal fracture of pure quartz; ancient toolmakers favored it, and high-quality rock was a trade item between tribes. Unlike quartz, chert is never transparent and not always translucent. It has a waxy or resinous luster unlike the glassy luster of quartz.à The colors of chert range from white through red and brown to black, depending on how much clay or organic matter it contains. It often has some sign of its sedimentary origin, such as bedding and other sedimentary structures or microfossils. They may be abundant enough for a chert to get a special name, as in the red radiolarian chert carried to land by plate tectonics from the central ocean floor. Special Cherts Chert is a quite general term for noncrystalline siliceous rocks, and some subtypes have their own names and stories. In mixed calcareous and siliceous sediments, the carbonate and the silica tend to segregate. Chalk beds, the calcareous equivalent of diatomites, may grow lumpy nodules of chert of the type called flint. (Similarly, thick chert beds may grow nodules and pods of limer ock limestone or dolomite rock.) Flint is commonly dark and gray, and more lustrous than typical chert. Agate and Jasper are cherts that form outside the deep-sea setting; they occur where fractures allowed silica-rich solutions to enter and deposit chalcedony. Agate is pure and translucent whereas Jasper is opaque. Both stones commonly have reddish colors from the presence of iron oxide minerals. The peculiar ancient banded iron formations consist of thin layers of interbedded chert and solid hematite. Some important fossil localities are in chert. The Rhynie Cherts in Scotland contain remains of the oldest land ecosystem from nearly 400 million years ago early in the Devonian Period. And the Gunflint Chert, a unit of banded iron formation in western Ontario is famous for its fossil microbes, dating from the Early Proterozoic time some two billion years ago. As much as we want to avoid it, the faint line between death and life is something we human beings have to learn how to live with. Robin Blacks short story: Divorced, Beheaded, Survived from 2010 portrays the life of Sarah before and after the tragic death of her brother. As Sarah is struggling with the difficulty of coping with her brothers death, she slowly draws closer to the essentials of the passage of life. Doubleday dealing with the plan of the loss of our loved ones Is tough and heart wrecking, but Is It possible to live on without a proper confrontation or closure of your grief? The storyline follows the protagonist Sarah through her mental progress of accepting the death of her brother, Terry. The emotional aspects in the story are exemplified through the twisted chronology consisting of Sarahs present life and flashbacks from her childhood. Black uses Sarah childhood home In Massachusetts as a contrast to show traces of Sarahs mental state of denial. WTFO my own children, that long- collected backyard is only part of grandmas and grandpas house, where we go for Thanksgiving, for the Christmas with Lyes folks in al- 52-53). It is shown here how the old backyard which used to hold a lot of importance for Sarah, her brother and their friends, has become a incidental place for annual occasions to her kids. This line emphasizes how Sarah has not passed on her Joyful memories to her kids as a result of her lack of confrontation about her late brother. The protagonist has still not fully processed her sorrow and she is therefore not capable f have her children involved in her own childhood. Also it is seen that Sarahs past still has a tremendous impact on her present life, as she speaks about the age gap between herself and Terry, comparing it to the amount of ages between her children Mark and Coco. The fact that she keeps intertwining past memories with her adult life throughout the storyline express that she Is still Incapable of letting go. Her present Is still muddled with the pain of the past. Later on Sarah reaches a significant turning point of her life, as a friend of her son, Mark, passes away in an accident. Sarah starts to see similarities between her son and herself, and slowly step-by-step she starts to open up about the details of the death of Terry. All the hurtful memories are reaching the light of day as Sarah for the first time In her life starts treating her long-hold sorrow. l took my son by the hand, into my room. Opened the dresser drawer and there he was, smiling out from above the softly folded scarves, the empty fingers of my own gloves seeming to want to hold him there. It was hard, I said to Mark, as he lifted the picture toward his face. There is no secret answer. It was terribly, terribly hard. (p. 5, II. 159-163). Near the end of the story, the amount of flashbacks and comparisons are reduced, as brother everyday, while feeling a little guilty, not only is her wound slowly healing, but Sarah draws closer to the understanding of life and death. It isnt only discomfort of disloyalty I feel, its the fact of utter disappearance after death. The idea that as loved as we may be, we may also be forgotten. If only for a day here and there. 4, II. 127-130). To bring the plot to a closure Black frames his short story with a last flashback about Sarahs near non-existent relation to her childhood friend, Molly Dunham. With this flashback Sarah finally understands how the thirty years without any confrontation has not been an essential way of coping with her pain, which could be one of the many messages of the story. Another message could be interpreted from the phrase where Sarah tries to convince herself that it is within human nature to keep on living. Maybe its a gift to be able to let go of the remembering. Some times. Some things. (p. 4, II. 155-156). With this phrase Black tells the readers that life goes on no matter what, and one should not be guilty about not thinking about the dead all the time, instead one should focus on holding on the Joyful memory and live life to its fullest. Another symbolic feature that lies within the choice of chronology and structure is the swift between present and past. It is a showcase for Sarahs past intertwining with her everyday life as a symbol of her incapability to let go. The title of the short story is Divorced, beheaded, survived which is the last part of a well-known phrase used to remember the six wives of king Henry 8th. The title itself is mostly explicit in the beginning and in the end of the story. Firstly as a memory of a fine day where Sarah, Terry and a couple of friends decides to act out the drama of king Henry 8th, then in another flashback from Sarahs high school days where they learn about king Henry 8th in history class. In many ways the title is sufficient to the plot and also from symbolic aspects. The phrase could be interpreted as a connection to the death of Terry. Intentionally the author chose to use the last part of the phrase as the title instead of the first. The only difference between the two parts is the fact that the word died is replaced with survived, Sarahs brother died by the hands of sickness, but because of all the memories that Sarah holds so dearly, Terry, still survived and he is therefore still alive in the heart of his sister. Judging from the essence of Robin Blacks short story, as much as life is filled with full and happy moments, all the dark sides like loss and death is something that is unavoidable. Death is part of life and the opposite. The sooner you realize it and start accepting those inevitable facts of the living the sooner you can free yourself from the endless cycle of grieving. For the protagonist, Sarah, the process of coping with her loss took decades, but luckily she realized that the only way out of the wilderness was to accept the fact that life goes on and our lost ones will always be alive in our hearts, even if we do not think of them every moment of our lives. Second, he must be able to enable others in the organization to manage their personal conflicts. This is important because those conflicts will eventually come to you taking your extra time if they are not resolved in time by the people involved. Third, he must be able to work out an effective plan or strategy that should make sure that workplace conflicts are avoided and if occur then resolved in time. Conflicts at work ââ¬Å"reflect systemic processes and patterns in how work gets doneâ⬠thus it is important to determine those patterns so that better conflict management is made possible. It is also important to discuss here why at all managing a conflict at a workplace is important and wh y medication becomes necessary. Moore defines the mediation as the involvement of a third party, the mediator, in the resolution of the conflict, where the mediator has no personal relations with any of the conflicting parties involved. The mediator does not make decisions but assists the parties to reach such a solution that is acceptable for all those involved. Doherty and Guyler suggest that ââ¬Å"there is a direct ratio between the quality of relationships across the workplace and long-term business effectiveness and success.â⬠Xhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15211463242317055990noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3373824037400233077.post-67177597205798136332019-11-18T20:03:00.001-08:002019-11-18T20:03:02.544-08:00Health Care Reform Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 wordsHealth Care Reform - Essay Example Some the benefits include allowing children to purchase insurance, at the start of 2014 women will no longer be charged more than men. Healthcare in the United States is a fundamental part of living. This is due to the many health issues that Americans face in a daily basis. However, the healthcare structure in the America is faced by a big problem of expensive services, which is not affordable to most of the people. A big percentage of American population is not medically insured and this leads to the physician visits being too expensive for an ordinary citizen. Approximately 44million Americans are not insured and an additional 38 million have insufficient health insurances. This population lives each day not sure what would happen if they fell sick or were in need of medical attention. The absence of a medical insurance therefore means that they cannot visit the physician for regular check ups and will always postpone illnesses or trips to the doctor because they simply cannot afford it. Delayed medical care for fear of expenses is a disaster considering the number of people in the country and the illnesses that could be treated early turning fatal. Shakespeare addresses Aristotles theory of tragedy, but he challenges the theory in many aspects through setting, plot, and character. Shakespeare seems to heavily incorporate the wheel of fortune theory of tragedy, mostly through the character Hamlet. Aristotle, who is concerned with formal presentation of tragic plays, defines tragedy as: a representation of an action that is worth serious attention, complete in itself, and of some amplitude; in language enriched by a variety of artistic devices appropriate to the several parts of the play; presented in the form of action, not narration; by means of pity and fear bringing about the purgation of such emotion. (Aristotle 38 9) Shakespeare employs character and plot in order to create an atmosphere that is unsettling and dark, which instead of conjuring fear and pity instead sets up an atmosphere rank with revenge. In this way, Hamlet does not follow Aristotles definition of tragedy. Another of the ways Aristotle characterizes tragedy is through The noble actions and the doings of noble persons (Aristotle 35). According to Aristotle, Hamlet should be a noble person committing noble actions. This is best represented in the scene where Hamlet refuses to kill Claudius during prayer. T his becomes the turning point for Hamlet, where he truly becomes an ignoble person, saying he wants Claudius Soul may be damned and black/ As hell, whereto it goes. Hamlet truly wants Claudius to suffer in the worst possible manner, and in doing so Hamlet falls from nobility. Aristotle also believed heroes are First and foremost good (Aristotle 51). Hamlet does contemplate good and evil frequently, but ultimately Hamlet fall from the path of goodness. Fortinbras may have been the kind of hero Aristotle characterizes, but Fortinbras is not a tragic character. The plot events with which Aristotle disagrees give meaning to Hamlets theme. Shakespeare intentionally portrays many characters unheroic. For example, Hamlet does not treat Ophelia well, but at the same time Ophelias unwavering loyalty to her father causes her to treat Hamlet badly. Both characters invoke disgust from the reader from their ignoble actions. The only characters who act somewhat heroic are Horatio and Fortinbras. Interestingly, these are the only two characters who survive, so Shakespeare may be making some kind of commentary on Aristotles tragic hero. Another theory of tragedy has to do with the wheel of fortune. This kind of Tragedy was perceived as a reversal of fortune, a fall from a high position. This view of tragedy derives from the Medieval concept of fortune, which was personified as Dame Fortune, a blindfolded woman who turned a wheel at whim; men were stationed at various places on the wheelthe top of the wheel represented the best fortune, being under the wheel the worst fortune. However, the wheel could turn suddenly and the man on top could suddenly be under the wheel, without warning. (Landmarks of Literature) There are many instances where Shakespeare incorporates these elements of tragedy into Hamlet. At the beginning of the play, Horatio cries out to the Ghost, Speak to me: If thou art privy to thy countrys fate, / Which, happily, foreknowing may avoid, / O, speak! Horatios outburst suggests that fate isnt inevitable, but earlier Horatio indicates that the Ghost is a bad omen, just like in Rome before the mightiest Julius fell and the graves stood tenantless and the sheeted dead/ Did squeak and gibber in the Roman streets. Horatios conception of fate embodies the fate of the the entire country, not the individual. In response to a comment about how mens faults can ruin reputations, Hamlet responds by saying, Carrying, I say, the stamp of one defect/ Being natures livery or fortunes star/ Their virtues else- be they pure as grace/ As infinite as man may undergo/ Shall in the general censure take corruption/ From that particular fault. Hamlet establishes his view of fate and bad character with this claim; he thinks you are either born with bad qualities or you acquire them through the environment (through no device of your own), but its not something that a person is in control of; rather it is something that simply happens to a person, and there is no way to avoid it. Later in this scene Hamlet exclaims, My fate cries out, / And makes each petty artery in this body / As hardy as the Nemean lions nerve. Hamlet believes it is his fate to follow the ghost, and because it is his fate he is given the strength and vigor with which to do it. Hamlet asks Rosencrantz and Guildenstern how they are, and Guildenstern answers, Happy, in that we are not over-happy, on fortunes cap we are not the very button. This is a joke that implies that Guildenstern and Rosencrantz live in Fortunes privates; This joke implies that Fortune is a whore. Later in the same scene, the idea that Fortune is a whore comes up again in a more serious tone. During a play, Hamlet asks the First Player to recite the piece of the death of Priam. Afterwards, the player comments: Out, out, thou strumpet, Fortune! All you gods, In general synod take away her power; Break all the spokes and fellies from her wheel, And bowl the round nave down the hill of heaven, As low as to the fiends! (2.2.493-497) The player is asking the gods to break Fortunes wheel and roll her down to hell. The idea is that our destinies are merely random, when people try to climb on top of the wheel it may simply move and the person on top becomes the one being crushed by the wheel. The First Players speech calls for a fate ruled by something other than Fortune. Hamlets third soliloquy suggests that fortune is simply out to hurt you and questioning whether it is even worth it to challenge the wheel of fortune: To be, or not to be: that is the question: / Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer / The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, / Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, / And by opposing end them? Before the play The Murder of Gonzago, Hamlet stands alone with Horatio and commends him as A man that Fortunes buffets and rewards / Hast taen with equal thanks. Hamlet goes on to praise Horatio for not becoming a pipe for Fortunes finger to play; Hamlet appears envious of Horatio, praising him for a quality that Hamlet himself lacks. Hamlet sees himself as passions slave, a person who cannot maintain a stable identity or sense of self. In The Murder of Gonzago the Player King tells his wife that he hopes when he dies she will find a good man and remarry. The wife promises vehemently she will not find another husband after his death, to which the king responds: This world is not for aye, nor tis not strange / That even our loves should with our fortunes change. The king points out that a man who has been favored by fortune could just as easily lose his fortune, and with it his friends, money, wife, etc. The king doesnt address it as though it is something to be deplored, but simply the way of life and something that needs to be accepted, because Our wills and fates do so contrary run / That our devices still are overthrown; / Our thoughts are ours, their ends none of our own. In the end, the king is right, and the wife quickly remarries after the kings death. After Polonius has been stabbed, Hamlet says to the body, take thy fortune; / Thou findst to be too busy is some danger. Hamlet believes Polonius fortune was not simply bad luck; Hamlet believes Polonius brought his own bad luck upon himself and had earned his own death. Later in the same scene, Hamlet says, For this same lord, / I do repent: but heaven hath pleased it so, / To punish me with this and this with me, / That I must be their scourge and minister. According to this view of things, Polonius death is not an accident at all, but part of a divine plan. In the last scene of the play, Hamlet writes to Horatio about how he found his own death warrant. Hamlet said he was sneaking around and told Horatio, let us know, / Our indiscretion sometimes serves us well, / When our deep plots do pall: and that should teach us / Theres a divinity that shapes our ends, / Rough-hew them how we will. Hamlet suggests that even though something may look random it could be part of a plan that will turn out for the better. Then, later, Hamlet repeats the concept; Horatio asks how Hamlet could have possibly sealed a new warrant with the kings seal. Hamlet replies, Why, even in that was heaven ordinant and explains that Hamlet had his fathers signet by chance and used it to make the seal. Even later in the scene, right before the final fencing duel, Hamlet says that everything is ill in his heart. He doesnt hint that this feeling is prophetic of his own death in any way, but when Horatio offers to call off the fencing match, Hamlet speaks as though he kno ws hes about to die: Not a whit, we defy augury: theres a special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come: the readiness is all: since no man has aught of what he leaves, what ist to leave betimes? Let be. In another view of this revenge tragedy, Hamlet is the player of a Senecan tragedy. He is involved in a sensational murder scene, commanded by a Senecan ghost desiring revenge, and after hampered by court intrigue, resorts to feigned madness. Since apparitions are known to tell half-truths to deceive people, Hamlet is given instruction without a resolute plan. For majority of the play, he acts with passion and indecision and he proceeds with the ghosts wishes as his adversary allows. And, for the most part, only Claudius, Hamlet, and Horatio know the action of revenge. From birth to early childhood, Isaac Newton overcame many personal, social, and mental hardships. It is through these experiences that helped create the person society knows him as in this day and age. The beginning of these obstacles started at birth for Newton. Isaac was born premature on Christmas Day 1642, in the manor house of Woolsthorpe, 7 miles south of Grantham in Lincolnshire. It is said that ââ¬Å"Because Galileo, . . . had died that year, a significance attaches itself to 1642â⬠(Westfall 1). Though his father had died before Isaac was born, he was given his fatherââ¬â¢s name. He was born into a farming family that had worked their way slowly up the ââ¬Å"social ladderâ⬠. The Newtonââ¬â¢s were one of the few families to prosper in Lincolnshire(Westfall 1). At the age of three Isaacââ¬â¢s life would take a drastic turn. When Isaac was three his mother, Hannah Ayscough, remarried to the Reverend Barnabas Smith(Internet-newtonia). Isaac and the Reverend never got along and the Reverend would not have a child that was not his living with him. Isaac stayed with his grandparents when his mother went to live with the Reverend in North Witham. His maternal grandmother raised Isaac until he was ten. It is believed that his motherââ¬â¢s second marriage and her leaving caused many problems for Isaac as a child. While living with his grandparents he attended day school nearby in Skillington and Stoke. Many cousins and other family members in the area surrounded Isaac though, ââ¬Å"He formed no bond with any of his numerous relatives that can be traced later in his lifeâ⬠(Westfall 11). In 1653 his mother returned after her second husband died. With her she brought one half brother and two half sisters. Although it is not known, bitterness may have inflicted Isaac when his three new siblings arrived. Never the less, two years later at the age of twelve he was sent to Grantham to attend grammar school. While attending grammar school Isaac lived with the apothecary Mr. Clark(Westfall 12). Mr. Clark had three stepchildren from the first marriage of his wife, Miss Storer, who were also living in his house. In school and at home Isaac was apparently different and did not get along with any other boys. Xhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15211463242317055990noreply@blogger.com0
